The US Geological Survey just announced it had chosen the name for Mike Brown's oddest discovery, 2003 EL61. It is to be known as Haumea, after the Hawaiian goddess of childbirth. But it's a bit more complicated than that. |
Mike Brown goes into detail on his site, but in short there was a very heated dispute over who deserved credit for discovering Haumea. A team from Spain are still listed as the official discoverers, even though Mike Brown insists that they stole his data and used it to beat him to the post. It's interesting that, given both his name and the Spaniard's selection, they chose his anyway. Says alot for the guy's mythic mind. I actually think that posterity will hand victory to Brown; he's shown that he's good at posterity.
