Mike Brown (of course) has finally been given the go-ahead to officially name 2005 FY9, or "Easterbunny". It is now known as Makemake (not sure, but I think it's pronounced "MAH-keh-MAH-keh"), who was the creator of humanity for the Rapa Nui culture of (natch) Easter Island. |
Makemake is the third largest trans-Neptunian object known, after Eris and Pluto.
Yeah, beautiful! Michael Brown's names for his team's discoveries are very inspired. Sedna, Eris, and now Makemake. :-) I feel we're lucky to have an astronomer like him at the telescope now.
A very rich well of myth and symbols to draw from with this one. Every time it hit a Virgo planet or my 12 degree Virgo ascendant in my life I felt as if I had swam or been washed up on a whole new island. I look back on these times and find it very similar to what others have been describing about the energies of Makemake in the chart. New conscious life lessons and sensual rhythms (blush).
